niseko classic 2017

日曜日はニセコクラシックでした

今年もワールドチャンピオンシップシリーズのレースでした

去年はこのレースで

パースのワールドチャンピオンシップに行けることになりました

今年のファイナルはフランスですが

残念ながら今年はいけません

でもニセコでオールアウトするよ！

後ろに小さいグループがついてくる

the niseko classic on Sunday

this is the qualifier for the gran fondo world championships

last year it was my ticket to a great week in Australia

this year the finals are in France

I can't go this year unfortunately

but I'm totally up for the niseko race!

the course is a cracker

lots of up and down

nowhere to hide on this course

only the strongest will prevail

I did a great 2 week taper

last week was short rides

short intervals

keeping fitness

dropping fatigue

on the boat to hokkaido

Bandai san and I rested up in style

a pre race warm up on Saturday

and we are both where we wanted to be

the field is much stronger this year

I'll start with the 3 best amateur riders in Japan

(Takaoka san and Morimoto san where the only 2 amateurs to finish the recent Japan national championships

Tazaki san my rival of old!)

we're in the second wave

Takaoka san wastes no time

working through the big group in front

he's great to watch on a bike

more difficult to follow

I make it

I'm on the front of the group with the big hitters

ideally I'd do 33 km tempo

before taking on the 17 km panorama climb at threshold

but I'm flirting with threshold from the gun

on the limit

the first big descent is a chance to recover

up to 90 kph down here

I smell a crash

rubber brake shoes on carbon?

rubber tyres on asphalt?

avoid the bottles spinning in the road

it's frantic

the tight left hand turn at the bottom

a few overcook it here too

it's strung out

single file

suddenly I'm going backwards

on the limit

but I can't keep the pace

of hard effort

dangling off the back of the group

trying to match the speed

Tazaki san is driving the pace on the front of the group

I keep them in sight all the way to the panorama line at 33km

maybe I can close it on the climb?

but this is a 17km hillclimb

the best climbers in Japan on the front of the group

here come the fireworks

and I have no spark

the HR

the power

mediocre

when it needs to be superior

riders coming up from behind

this doesn't usually happen

halfway up the climb I get it back

get the rhythm back

fire in the legs

start picking off riders

as a big diesel climber

I get a train going

but this is a survival train

last year I thought I'd won the KOM

this year we are 6 minutes down

the fast descent

the long flat out to the Japan Sea and back

it's difficult to get this group working well

I do a big effort to pull us up to a second chase group just before the turn

rotating a little better

a chance to get ready for the next big climb of the day

and qualification for the worlds

a great few days in Hokkaido

looking forward to next year already
