niigata prefectural championships road race report

holding form is tricky, but I think I did a good job to enter the race with the same form as for Tokyo-Itoigawa

今年から新しいコースです
105 km / 15 周
一周の間に登り坂ｘ２
登り坂の間に風が強いのロングフラットがある

my form

東京糸魚川の二週間後
フォームをキープするために
リカバーをするために
トレーニングを考えました

レースの前に
トレーニングピークスデータは
東京糸魚川前とほとんど同じ
いいですね！

その二週間のトレーニングに
新潟ロードレースのために
練習を考えました

1. じょんのびマラソンコース練習
登り坂と下り坂も
弥彦のコースみたい

2. ぐるぐるコース練習
風が強いの長いフラットは
弥彦のコースみたい

僕たちは二人でプランニングをしなければなりません

ポイントは三つ

• 1. 二人で逃げるのは難しい
  もう二人くらいが一緒に逃げたいことです

• 2. 一回アタックして逃げるは難しい
  3、4回アタックすれば
  グループが「まだやっている!ムリだよ!」と思ってもらって
  チャンスになる

• 3. どんどんアタックすると
  グループが小さくなる
  サバイバルレースになると良い

the niigata road race on sunday

the course

a new course this year
105 km / 15 laps of the circuit
two climbs at each end
a long exposed flat section in the middle

my form

two weeks after Tokyo-Itoigawa
I worked hard to hold my form
a mixture of high intensity training
and rest
the balancing act!

the training peaks data going into the race is almost identical as two weeks ago
good stuff!

in the last 2 weeks I did lots of specific work

• 1. the jyonnobi marathon circuit
  with its similar climbs and descents

• 2. the guruguru circuit
  with long and exposed flat straights

I feel ready

my strategy

I know I won't win the sprint on the final climb

the worst case scenario is to roll over in 70th position at the back of the bunch

no point waiting

the plan is to escape with Bandai san

solo riders amongst bigger teams

we have been planning this on facebook messenger!

three points:

• 1. we will need 1 or 2 other riders to make it work

• 2. it will take 3 or 4 attacks to make a break stick
  
  get the group thinking
  "there they go again. they've got no chance"

and

you have a chance

• 3. even if a break doesn't stick

repeated attacking should form a select group on this tough course

race day

I find myself off the front solo up the climb
much to the delight of the crowd

but after almost 2 laps off the front we are caught

if you attack once, everyone will chase you

if you attack repeatedly, get caught repeatedly
less people are keen to chase

at the base of the climb we have 25 seconds

"don't go too hard here, we'll make the time up on the descent and flat"
I urge Tazaki san
"you sound like a pro!"
"nah! I'm just scared you're gonna drop me!"

but he plays my game for now

like times of old I crest the climb
shoulder to shoulder
with "the champion"

from behind we are joined by four riders
including FINS ace Ikeda san
and my partner in crime Bandai san

this is the winning move

a couple of laps

we build up a minute

wary of the others

I try to set the pace on the climb

the pro rider in the mix thinks I'm attacking
a few angry words exchange

right here Tazaki san lifts the pace

only slightly

just enough

to put you under

I lose a few wheel spaces

but I'm the fastest descender in town

confident I'll get them

but down the hill
across the flat

I'm 8th or 9th on the road

With repeated accelerations on the climb
I'm sure they'll drop a few more

my job is to sweep them up

a nice guy
we rotate a bit
but he's dropped on the climb

next up is Bandai san

the group is chasing from behind

at the turn
I call Bandai san to wait for me

together we are
thinking we are 5th and 6th on the road

I do a long pull
he does the same
my second pull
but he drops off

I really want to goal with him

looking back I can see the group closing fast

gotta go full gas here

happy for Ikeda san and Tazaki san who secured 1st and 2nd
both of them were animated and rode aggressively
well done!
