"yeah there's like 17 big climbs on this course" trying to put the frightners on Tim
Stefano
Stefano
NEVER GIVE UP!
ニセコまでのアップダウンはつらい!
「5 km to go.」

holding good position as we enter the first climb of the day
Niseko Gran Fondo UCI Classic
This race has been my main focus this year. Building fitness progressively. Before backing off 3 weeks ago to adapt and peak for the event.
Held in beautiful Hokkaido, this is the Asian qualifier for the world championships in Perth.
The course is a cracker.
A 140km loop on wide fast closed roads.
2 big climbs and several smaller punchers. 2,500 m up.
The weather on Saturday is beautiful.
On Sunday? Raining cats and dogs! But the English don't mind the rain!
Lots of friends in the mix. Determined to have a fun race. Put it all out on the road.
anticipating Adam's attack at the top of the Panorama line
A 6:50 AM start.
3,2,1 GO!
A neutral start for 2 km. But the usual jostling for position.
330 riders of all categories in the mix.
Once the flag drops, I find myself on the front. Safely through the first few corners. All smiles with Kohei san. A bit of facetime on youtube?
Climbing after 5 km. I feel good. Holding good position.
After 15 km there is a long and super fast descent. Speeds touching 90 kmph.
I've studied this course (strava, youtube) and identified this descent as critical.
There is a sharp left turn at the bottom of the climb (20 km). Need to be near the front here to avoid being caught in a split.
Heavy rain. Poor visibility. Glad I make it through.
At the turn a small group has a gap. 4 guys including Seb and Adam.
What a move!
11 km to the sprint point (31 km). Can they hold off the group?
Up and down. Both our guys are strong. The "Hot Sprint 1 km to go" sign comes out of nowhere.
The group are in hot pursuit now. A long straight dip in the road. The 4 still have a gap. Sprint time!
Adam takes it! The killer!
My money is on him for the KOM too.
Enter the Panorama climb (35 km) for 12 km of climbing.
Up to around 170 HR at the bottom. I find Adam's wheel. The HR drops to low 160s as I lock on. Pacing me up the climb. Like days long gone!
Raining now as we enter the clouds. Just the wheel. Follow the wheel.
With about 3 km to go Adam starts to move up and then launches. I go with him.
Hold his wheel.
"We've got a gap mate!"
The road eases.
I come round to the front.
I'll lead him out till the lights go out.
A few guys bridge.
"Tempo for a bit" Adam advises.
Gradually we pull this small group away from the bunch.
"You need to finish it mate" I say
"I've got a bit, but not much"
Still 2 km to go.
Waiting for my man.
"Andy, you go for it!"
What!?!
A short dig gets a gap.
Thick cloud now.
Out of site out of mind.
Big ring.
Legs on fire.
Through the mist.
Here comes the sign.
"KOM POINT..."
"...1 km to go"
Arrrggggh!
This is gonna hurt!
The last km is always the hardest.
Nobody behind.
Just the camera bike for company.
Just got to TT it.
Resist the temptation to drop the chain ring.
Grinding it out.
I'm on the edge of blowing.
Try to hold 350 Ws.
Should be enough.
Here she comes.
"KOM point"
Get in!
Screaming at the few spectators up here!
Shaking my fist to the camera man!
The KOM in a road race!
My finest hour!
It's not till the finish that Adam will say,
"You did well to catch those 2 guys mate"
"What two guys?"
"You know when I told you to "Go get 'em!" "
Haha!
I could cry!
If we weren't sat in our freezing cycling gear...
With all our worldly possessions lost in my missing backpack...
cheer up lads, it could be February
But that's a different story. Back to the race!
The Panorama line descent should be beautiful. But it's raining now. So hard. The kind of rain that hurts!
The road is a river in places. Brakes are useless.
In the TDF, the race leader would slow things right down.
But this is dog eats dog bike racing.
Amazingly no crashes. Glad to be on the flat road out to the sea.
The rain eases. A strong headwind helps to keep the group together.
The road turns at the coast. Torrential rain again. But the tailwind home is appreciated.
I find the sweetspot in the bunch with Adam and Seb. Enjoy chatting. Make sure to get enough fuel in for the climbs to come. Spinning the legs to recover.
Stefano is doing big turns on the front. I think he's doing too much. But in hindsight, maintaining a bit of intensity may have helped with what was to come...
I thought the 2nd big climb (100 km) would be easier. Just roll through it.
But after a long rest it's difficult to get going again.
A sharp right and your straight on it. Game on!
I feel the effects of the KOM challenge in my legs straight away.
This is gonna be tough.
The group starts to splinter. It's a case of working through the carnage.
I follow Adam's wheel for a while. Then Stefano's.
So close that our tyres kiss as he gets out of the saddle.
Need to keep focus. I let Stefano go. He's killing me!
He does an amazing descent to get back on. Crazy rain. No brakes. Well done!
Seb and I are just off the back.
The last climb. The lead group is still in sight. I work with Seb to get back on.
We get up through the cars. But don't... quite... make... it...
Survival mode now. Consolidate the position. Pass a few stragglers.
The punchers into Niseko really hurt.
But I've done this before. Never give up. If you're hurting, they're really hurting.
5 km to go.
1 km to go.
500 m to go.
GOAL!
entering the second big climb. Nishitani san looking good in the middle
3rd in my age group. A great result.
Stefano one step up in 2nd.
Seb 3rd in his group.
And Adam the sprint prize.
Not a bad day at the office!
Qualification for the UCI world championships in Perth.
Need to make a decision on that....
A great race in the wonderful Niseko.
Thanks to the guys for a great weekend and loads of laughs.
Thanks to GS ASTUTO wheels. Everyone on GS ASTUTO wheels or under their guided training was on the podium.
Thanks to Tokyo Cycling Coach who has helped me podium every race I've entered this year.
March: 3rd
April: 2nd
May: 1st
June: 1st, 2nd
July: 3rd
With the knowledge gained at Niseko this year, I can put in a better effort still next year.
Bring it on!
3rd on the podium and qualification for the worlds!

hi andy and friends
I would like you to invite a cycling evet in shitada, sanjyo.
I am currently working at NPO in shitada area, and we try to bring people from outside to this area, shitada is a such a beautiful area and it has a huge potential for the tourism.
the even will be held on 30th of july,
it will be about 40km, and you will run it within 3hrs.
so its more fun ride than race. the purpose of the even is `slow down a bit and look around nature, you will discover something that you will always miss when you are on the speed` some like that ;)
and we will visit a farm house to take a break in the middle. so you have interact with local people.
shitada is already peddlers paradise, and you should come to see how the area is if you never been here.
if you or your friend is intersted in it, please contact me. i will inform you more.
sincerely
Rei
Rei,
Thank you for commenting on my blog! I hope you like it.
Your event sounds very interesting.
Unfortunately I only ride my bike very early in the morning as I have 2 young boys.
I enter one event each month but I already went to Niseko. Next month I will join a local event in Kashiwaaki.
If you want to invite cyclists from around Niigata, this group on facebook is very good.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/381625862029267/
If you want to invite foreign cyclists in Japan, I recommend Tokyo Cycling Club.

If you want to promote your event on the TCC site, I can make a post for you.
Good luck with your event. I'm sure it will be a great success.
