a picture tells a thousand words
Last week was peak week 2.
After a great training build up, I find myself knocked down with a cold.
As my friend Aniel points out "Being sick the week before an event can be a good thing. It makes you rest and take care of yourself..."
In bed with the kids at 8.
9 to 10 hours sleep Monday to Thursday
Light spinning only.
Raise the heart rate for the first time in 10 days on Thursday.
Again on Friday.
Coughing up phlegm. But the legs feel good!

the jyonnobitime crew
Tokyo-Itoigawa on Saturday.
280 plus km. 2,000 plus metres climbing.
A 530 am start.
Lucky to be joined by 2 more deisel engines in Daito san and Basil.
We are also joined by two riders from Team Rogers. Making us a 5.
Nishitani san and Team Ovest will start 30 minutes behind us. I tell the Rogers' guys that we have to ride well together if we don't want to be beaten from behind.
start to CP 1
3,2,1 GO!
I love the start. Super fast.
I also love riding with Daito san. "GO, GO, GO!" he shouts from behind. Motivated from the gun.
Basil, Daito and I take turns. Nice high speed. The Rogers guys don't come through. I wasn't expecting them to.
We need to stick to our game plan.
We are making good time. So much so that we catch teammate and fast man Oba San on Fujimi Pass.
4 of us now. Safely to CP1.
CP 1 to CP 2
The first test is the steep start to Shiojiri Pass.
Oba san is off the front. Basil and then Daito are off the back.
The descent is long and fast. Basil does an excellent job to get back on. Daito isn't so lucky.
Through Matsumoto city Basil shows his strength. I thought I was the fastest through here but he is flying. "Like the new Joetsu shinkansen!" comments Oba san.
Oba san also does some good pulls once out of the city. His accelerations are sharp but once on the back you are flying.
CP2 right on schedule.
CP2 to CP3
Oba san, Basil and I keep the momentum going. I feel really good. We have 5 or 6 sitting on but things should break up on Sakanaka Pass.
After 180 km this is like a hillclimb. It's hot too.
I imagine I'll ride Oba san's wheel. And we’ll drop the others. But he's climbing souplesse. Off he goes.
I have the Rogers' guys locked on my wheel.
I strike the deal. Push a little and,
「I'll tow you to Itoigawa but I finish first.」
「Sure.」
Promises made.
Basil is off the back.
Oba san is off the front. But we'll catch him and mechanical problems see him off the back too.
Over the top. Me and two teammates off a rival tem. A promise made. A Nalsima Friend rider makes it 4.
I put my trust in them. Pull us to CP 3.
CP 3 to finish
Downhill. It's fast. But it's a ferocious head wind. I have to work the 53×11.
Full gas all the way to Arai.
Once on the flat the wind slaps you in the face. 50 kmph changes to 20 kmph. It's torture. I could wave them onto the front. But that would break the deal. Make it a free for all.
「Are you okay?」
「Never been better!」
Poker time.
If the wind doesn't change, I might die on the road...
Luckily the wind on the coast is a beauty. Time trialling at 40 kmph!
Time to put it all out. Eat everything in the pockets. Head down. Smash the pedals. 40 km to go!
Why do I always come good after 250 km!?
Drive it home.
The guys keep their word.
1,2,3 at the finish.
Win No.8! - the trophy in the shop for another year
8 h 50 mins, 287 km, 33.5 kmph, 2,500 m climbing, 400 TSS
I was happy to claim my 8th victory in this gruelling event.
Thank you to all the じょんのびTIME support staff
solid, solid as a rock
GS Astuto wheels - this event is the ultimate test, climbing over tough mountain passes, braking hard on fast descents, riding the gutter through the cities...
and Tokyo Cycling Coach - we've been targeting this race all year, I did my best training and best resting ever...
Looking forward to next year already!
