- build 3 week 3, 14 h, 400 TSS
Race time!
1. Luke's race
Double exclamation mark
3rd place for Luke!
2. Dad's race
3,2,1 Go!
"Let's go!"
ATTACK!
12 laps, 12 times up the climb
Boom!
"Let's work together".
Last lap
covering the moves with Adachi san
Last week was build 3 week 3.
With one eye on Sunday's race, I backed off the training.
Some race simulation on Wednesday is the only hard work.
Monday: rest
Tuesday: easy
Wednesday: race simulation
Thursday: easy
Friday: easy
Saturday: rest
Sunday: race
- build 3 week 3, 14 h, 400 TSS
Race time!
1. Luke's race
"I'm gonna win!"
"They're all much older."
"Still gonna win!"
"They're all on road bikes."
"Watch me!"
3 laps. 3.6km. Up and down. No flat! Rain! Wind! Braveheart!
So proud. So impressed.
Podium boy!
a 3 man attack
2. Dad's race
12 laps, 72 km of the hilly Gunma CSC circuit.
I roll up the the start line in leg warmers. Winter top. Windbreaker. Back pack. Like the Michelin man!
"Start in 30 seconds" over the speaker.
What!? Rip the layers off frantically.
3,2,1 Go!
Me and 2 teammates.
Strong and on form Yamada san. Team ace road racer Adachi san.
I'll work for both of them.
Yamada san is straight to the front. Oh to be young again!
Then he's off the front.
A two man breakaway with Amemiya san.
Adachi san and I control the group. Slow on the front. Follow the attacks. Keep it together.
After 3 laps, Yamada san is dropped. Back in the group. We start to rotate.
Amemiya san is a lone escapee. He has 20s, 25s, 30s, 35s...
If we don't go after him...
I try a few attacks. Pulled back each time.
Adachi san has a knee problem. He does a big turn before pulling off after 5 laps.
I attack over the top of the climb.
Caught.
Yamada san counters. Another rider follows. I take his wheel. 3 of us away.
"Let's go!"
But we are caught again.
A few weeks ago we rode with an ex pro. His advice: "Attack when nobody expects it."
On the descent. 5th man. 53×11. Launch it just before the first tight bend.
Wet roads. Wind swept debris. Chance to fly!
Safely through. Stomp the pedals. Next the right hander. Carry the speed. Ride the wind. Look back. A decent gap.
Out of sight, out of mind. My first objective. Full gas along the bottom section.
Surprised to get the leader in my sights.
"15 seconds"
Chase time. 5 or 6 laps left. Time on my side.
"10 seconds"
He's looking back. Is he fading? Ready to blow up?
But he holds the gap.
He's looking back. Looking back.
It's hard to know who is playing who.
I think he's tiring. Sitting here I'll grind him down. In his rear view mirror. Like the truck in "Duel". Blow him up. Or force a mistake.
Or maybe he's playing me? Pretending to be suffering. But holding the gap.
training partners, racing partners, trying to make things happen with Yamada san
Still I have time.
4 laps to go
I catch him at the bottom of the climb.
He accelerates up the steep section. He was 2nd at Mt. Fuji Hillclimb last year. And it shows. I don't need to burn all my matches here.
Still at 10 seconds.
TT mode
A 90 minute TT.
He is only 21. But he's smart.
I think I'll get him on the descents. But like me. He's pacing himself.
Holding back on the climbs. Pushing on the descents.
2 laps to go
"4 seconds"
Catch him on the descent.
"Let's work together".
I pull.
His turn.
He doesn't take it.
Suffering?
Playing me?
Maybe I can ride him off my wheel?
No, he's still there.
Signal him through.
I want to pace him up the climb.
Back on the front.
Boom! There he goes again!
Don't panic.
Last lap
If I catch him, and ride with him, he'll beat me in the sprint.
I know my strengths.
I plan to roll over him on the last home straight.
Risky business. The last roll of the dice.
Hard effort on the last climb. Close enough to him.
The pain of dropping the gears.
As hard as I can. As hard as he can.
Home straight. Big gear...
Almost there...
Too late....
3s on the line.
Doesn't sound like a lot.
But he was the worthy winner.
Out on his own for 72 km.
Good job!
Satisfied with my performance. Great training for Tokyo-Itoigawa too.
Here we go!
3rd place in March, 2nd place in April, bring on May!
